When is a Bargain not a Bargain?
There is an old saying - if it looks too good to be true it probably is - so how do you spot the con's on the Internet?
Cheap item - High P&P
This one occurs a lot on EBay but why should you worry? - well if you want to return the item you can only get a refund for the purchase price EXCLUDING the P&P so if you paid £1 plus £29.99 P&P for a dress that you want to return , your refund will be £1!
Some overseas sellers use this scam to avoid import duty.  You could end up with a big bill and a fine from the Customs team if they catch your parcel and think you're trying to evade paying duty
Old Models
Are you getting last year's model TV, Computer etc? You may not care about the latest gadgets but if the warranty expires early you may be more concerned.
Secondhand Goods
Some companies buy up returned items then resell them.  If they tell you that is what they are doing you can pick up a bargain.  But if they don't you could be in trouble.
This is  particularly a problem for electronic goods, if they have been registered with another user, the software licences may be invalid and you may not get technical support
Goods "Not as described"
You may see a lovely picture on the WWW site but what happens when you get the goods in the post and they are completely different?
Sometimes this is acceptable if you've been told that your goods will be in a plain box rather than the proper box (common with reselling returned goods) but if you weren't told you should be able to get all your money back INCLUDING P&P.

Please note - it is often very very hard to get good colour reproduction on digital cameras and computer screens and so minor variations in shade are to be expected and are not covered by this. Equally goods sold as secondhand are not expected to be perfect and unused.
Selling 'unlabeled' goods
Many retail clothes chains will sell last seasons items to other retailers but will insist that the lables are removed or defaced (this is to stop customers taking them back into the store for a refund!).  Provided you are told before you buy this is perfectly legal but if the item was sold as "Brand New With Tags/Labels" (BNWT/BNWL) but your item comes without you can return for a refund.
